Gretsch G3155

19 November 2009 No Comment
If you're familiar with Gretsch's Historic line of guitars which made their debut in 1999, you might also be familiar with the G3155 Streamliner. The G3155 was supposed to be the Historic version of the old Streamliner from the late 1950s, but like all of the guitars in the Historic line, the G3155 was barely recognizable as a reflection off its predecessor. To begin with, it was manufactured as part of the company's Korean the manufacturing project; an idea that didn't turn out too well. But beyond that, the G3155 barely resembled the earlier Streamliners.

This guitar was a hollow-body with a maple laminate top, maple neck, and rosewood fret board. One of the most interesting aspects of this guitar are the sound holes, which are "cat eye" in this case rather than traditional f-holes. The G3155 also featured two Dynasonic single-coil pickups, neoclassic inlays, plastic tortoise pickguard, and four control knobs on the lower bout. The 3155 is the red version of the Historic Streamliner, but it afforded two other distinct differences from the rest in the line: a standard Bigsby tailpiece and gold hardware.

The entire Historic line was designed to be an entry-level line to compete with low-end Gibsons. In that respect the Gretsch game plan worked flawlessly. However, the Historic line was typified by a sort of "mix-and-match" mentality in terms of hardware and specific features. As the line progressed it became so convoluted that it was difficult for both Gretsch and its customers to keep track of which guitars had what. A few years after they began, all of the Historics were melded into a new Electromatic line. Thus, if you can find a Historic Streamliner, snap it up just for the collectors value alone. If you enjoy playing it as well, that's an added bonus!
