The original 6193 Country Club switched to a maple top in 1955. The body and neck were both maple while the fretboard was standard rosewood. It featured single-coil DeArmond pickups, a Melita bridge, "G" tailpiece, Grover Stairstep tuners, gold plated hardware, and thumbnail inlays. The headstock featured a block-letter Gretsch logo but no Synchromatic logo. The dual volume control knobs were placed on the lower bout, a master volume on the cutaway, and the tone control and pickup selector switch on the upper bout.

1958 saw the DeArmonds replaced with FilterTron pickups, while the zero fret and a reduced body size were introduced in 1960. From there the 6193 Country Club underwent mostly cosmetic changes. It was probably Gretsch's most successful guitar on a commercial level, enjoying continuous production until the factory that made them was shut down by Baldwin in 1981. Thankfully, when the Gretsch family regained their company they brought the Country Club back. Under the ever-watchful eye of Fender production still continues today.

When it comes to jazz on a Gretsch guitar, the Country Club and White Falcon are in pretty stiff competition. The White Falcon is flashier than the Country Club, and their sound is about even, yet both have excellent playability and are known for producing some of the best jazz tones in the business.
