The most important feature of the 6189 was the dual SuperTron pickups. In fact, the Vikings were the first model to go with the SuperTrons. These babies gave the Viking a snarling sound when hooked up with the right amps. It also featured a maple body and neck, zero fret, ebony fretboard, and a strange inlay pattern which utilized thumb prints through the 12th fret and dots beginning at the 15th. As for the gadgetry, that's what the Viking was all about.

The 6189 came with a roller bridge, a floating tuning fork on the tailpiece, single mute, pickup selector and tone switches on the upper bout, two volume controls and one master. There was also a gaudy Viking ship pickguard, a nameplate on the headstock, and even a padded back. Unfortunately, when Baldwin took over they started stripping down the Viking as a way to cut costs, until it was nothing more than a shell of its former self. Eventually it was discontinued in 1975.

For fans of the 1960s Vikings and Falcons, Baldwin's ownership was one of the worst things that happened. But that's water under the bridge now. Collectors are still love the Viking and will pay pretty good money for one in excellent condition.
