Gretsch 6120 CGP

Gretsch 6120 CGPThe Gretsch 6120 line, also known as the first of Chet Atkins models, is believed by many Gretsch fans to be the consummate Gretsch electric hollow-body. There is certainly no shortage of guitar aficionados would even say the 6120 is the best guitar ever made. Whether or not that's true, it was one of the company's bestsellers during the years it was produced. There were several versions of this guitar including the 6120 CGP - a 16" stereo model. It was a limited release guitar so it's hard to say how many were actually produced.

The 6120 CGP featured the standard maple body and neck, rosewood fretboard, and thumb print inlays. It was a single cutout guitar with genuine F-holes, dual DeArmond single-coil pickups, Bigsby vibrato and bridge, gold pick guard, and polished gold hardware. It also had plenty of the Western details that made Chet Atkins guitars so famous, including the "G" brand and the Longhorn inlaid headstock.

The guitar was first introduced in 1954 and lasted for about 10 years. Through 1957 the only changes were cosmetic ones, and none of them were major by any stretch of imagination. The first real mechanical change came in 1958 when the DeArmondss were replaced with brand-new FilterTrons. 1958 also saw the rosewood fretboard replaced with ebony and the switches and control knobs moved to new positions on the body.

Even though the 6120 CGP was discontinued in 1960s, it was brought back in the late 1990s when the Gretsch family once again secured use of the Chet Atkins name. The modern 6120 CGPs are a pretty close replication of their 1950s predecessors. Some would say they look a little better and even play a little better, too. But for vintage guitar lovers there will never be anything like the original.
