It's as though Gretsch took one each of all its previous electric archtops, threw them into a big pot, and mixed them up. Then, after fully cooking the mixture down out came the Rally. This guitar featured dual HiLoTron pickups - like just about every other guitar of the day. It's 16", dual cutaway body was made of maple, and worked with a maple neck and rosewood fretboard. Thumbnail inlays, a Bigsby tailpiece, and an unusually ugly pickguard resulted in a visual presentation that was less than stunning. And to make matters worse, Gretsch's attempt to spice it up with a few decorative rally stripes only made it look worse.

As far as tone and playability are concerned, the 6105 Rally was typical Gretsch. For fans of the Gretsch sound this guitar was everything you hoped it would be. The only odd thing in this regard was the treble boost control on the upper bout. If anything, they should add a bass boost switch instead. HiLoTrons naturally produce a tone that's high in treble anyway.

In the end, the 6104 and 6105 Rallies were certainly not Gretsch's finest piece of work. Sales and reviews bore that out and they were mercifully discontinued in 1970, after only three years in production.
