When Gretsch first released the G6003 it was intended to compete with popular flat-top acoustics from Martin and Gibson. Customer response in the first couple of years was rather lukewarm due to the impression that the G6003 was nothing more than a cheaply made imitation of its competitors. But they say that in business, quality always wins the day. That turned out to be true for Gretsch given the fact that as more people purchased and played these guitars, the more they told other people how wonderful they were.

The G6003 Jimmie Rogers was built with a spruce top, mahogany sides and neck, and a rosewood fretboard with 22 frets and dot inlays. Aesthetically it was nothing super exciting to look at, but the playability was phenomenal. The designers incorporated a flat-top bridge and a bone nut perfectly fashioned to give this guitar classic Gretsch action. For a midrange flat-top acoustic, this guitar played very well indeed. Furthermore, its light weight and easy playability made it the ideal acoustic for longer sets and gigs that didn't require a more expensive electric archtop.

The G6003 enjoyed a long run as the mainstay of the Gretsch acoustic line. For those who purchased them, they seemed to like a well kept secret that made them feel special as guitar players. Those who have never seen or played one really should.
