Gibson ES 350

1 February 2010 No Comment
Gibson ES 350The Gibson ES-350 was a modified ES-300 in production from 1947 to 1956. It was so similar to the ES-300 that many experts consider the two guitars virtually identical except for the ES-350s rounded cutaway. Both were full-bodied guitars with a plywood and maple laminate body at 17" wide. There were a handful of Spruce models produced from 1952 to 1956.

The 1947 ES-350 was originally released with a single P-90 pickup, a beveled-edge pickguard, trapeze tailpiece, triple-bound top, single-bound fretboard, gold-plated hardware, and either a natural or Sunburst finish. The rarest of these guitars was the blonde ES-350, which was manufactured in very limited numbers. For example, there were only 46 made for the 1950 model year.

In 1948 ES-350 added a second P-90 pickup and a very odd volume/tone control setup. There were two volume controls to the right of the pick guard, just where you'd expect them, but Gibson decided on a single tone control knob mounted on the cutaway. Not only was a single tone control not conducive to good sound management, but the placement of the knob itself just seemed unnatural. Regardless, the design stayed put until the dual tone control and a three-way switch were added in 1952.

1956 brought the discontinuation of the standard ES-350 in favor of a new thin-line edition. As the last true full-bodied archtops from Gibson, the end of the ES-350 marked the end of a unique period in the history of jazz guitars. A history dotted with the likes of Tal Farlow and Barney Kessel.

Gibson's rich sound continued even with the thin bodied model, but there was something about the original 350's gusto and bravado that was never duplicated. For collectors, the early ES-350 is still a great instrument even though the later spruce bodies tend to be more desirable.

Oven temperatures on Gibson Elite II oven?

I just moved into an apartment that has an old old Gibson Elite II Oven, however the oven is so old that the temperature markings (e.g. 350 degrees, 400, 450, broil, etc.) on the knob have worn off. Does anyone know where I can find a picture of the proper temperature settings or something similar? I don't want to burn my food to a crisp by accident!

get an oven thermometer and put it in the oven to use to make sure the temperature is right.
