Gibson ES 235
| Every now and again you'll come across a forum post where someone talks about owning or selling a Gibson ES-235. The only problem is, Gibson never made an electric archtop designated with that model number. Among their list of thinline models they produced the ES-225, the ES-330, and the ES-335, among others. As for their standard electric archtops the closest model designation is the ES-295. After lots of research, we are forced to conclude that forum postings mentioning the ES-235 are really referring to the 335.
We make this judgment based on the fact that the ES-335 is among the most popular of all Gibson electric archtops. In fact, it began production in 1958 and is still being made today as a semi-hollow, double-cutaway guitar with a maple center block. The original 1958 model sported two humbucker pickups, each one having its own volume and tone control in the area of the lower F-hole. A rosewood fretboard with dot inlays, Kluson tuners, and a Bigsby tailpiece rounded out the package. The ES-335 went through a ton of changes over the next 40 years, so there are a lot of variations. If we're talking about the ES-225, that model was available from 1955 to 1959. That guitar was a fully-hollow, thinline instrument which was really just a jazzed up version of the ES-125TC. It came in both single and dual pickup models (with P-90s being used) and featured a trapeze combination bridge and tailpiece. Another curious feature of this guitar is that single pickup models placed the pickup at neither the bridge nor neck position, but rather, right in the middle. The odd design of the ES-225 is one of the contributing factors that limited its production to only four years. By the way, if we're wrong and you own an ES-235, we'd love to hear from you! |
