What do the tone & volume knobs on an Epiphone guitar actually do? How about the Rhythm/treble switch?

FYI, I have an Alleykat...

Pickup selectors, volume, and tone controls all pretty much work the same on all guitars (with a few exceptions).

This may be more technical than you were really looking for, but I'm funny like that:

Pickup selector:
Uh...selects which pick you use. It's kind of funny how they are labelled on different guitars. Yours is Rhythm/Treble. On my Les Paul, it's Rhythm/Solo. Most of my other guitars don't have anything labeled on them.

The Treble position selects the pickup closest to the bridge. This position has less bass in the sound. This will give you the most cutting sound, and works best with chords if you're using distortion.

The Rhythm position selects the pickup closest to the neck. Because the strings are moving in a wider arc at this point, there's more bass present in this position.

Put it in the middle, and you have a combination of the two.

Volume Control:
Controls how much signal is sent to the amp. Technically, it's a voltage divider. Turn it all the way up, and your pickup is pretty much connected directly to the amp input. Turn it to zero, and you've shorted the pickup to ground (and no signal goes to the amp).

Tone Control:
That's technically a variable low pass filter. As you turn it down, you start shunting your high frequencies to ground, which results in a darker sound. Most guitarists hardly ever use these, but they are there is you want to.

The best thing you can do is plug in and start turning the knobs! You're not going to hurt anything, and may find a cool combination in there somewhere.

Enjoy.
